Ha Giang with the majestic beauty of the highest land of our nation, makes a lot of backpackers desire to conquer. Ha Giang sightseeing is originally well-known for its vast pink buckwheat flower covering stone plateau. But only people who have come there just know – Ha Giang looks beautiful in every seasons, worth for you to explore at any time.
1. Dong Van Stone Plateau – the mysterious gray color of stone
The first wonder is Dong Van Plateau which created the scene of gray stone that locals people “live in stone, dead also in stone” – extremely special for Ha Giang.
Ha Giang is the topmost location of Vietnam North Pole. It is also one of the most ancient plateaus on Earth, therefore Dong Van Plateau was admitted to be global geology park by UNESCO in December 2010.
2. Mansion of the Wang- a green gem in the heart of the plateau
The second wonder is the green gem in the heart of Plateau – the Wang’s mansion is beautiful with shape look like “Wang” word and surrounded by pine trees, which has been originally preserved after the rise and fall of history, under sun and rain, so it brings with itself a fascinating history story.
The Wang mansion was started building in 1019 and totally completed after 10 years later with a total cost reaching to 150,000 silver coins (equivalent to 150 billion Vietnam dong at that time). On the tortoiseshell-shape-hill top with the rows of pine tree rising strongly, there is a house shaping Wang superbly growing as a print among blue space.
3. Lung Cu flag pole – “Where to start drawing the first stroke of Vietnam’s map”
The third wonder is Lung Cu flag pole – “where to start drawing the first stroke of our country’s map “, which any Vietnamese also want to conquer this sacred northernmost position even once.
Getting over the distance of 1.5 kilometers to Lung Cu flagpole then overcoming 389 stone steps and climbing more 140 spiral stairs right at the flagpole’s heart, we will step our foot on the top of Lung Cu flagpole, Ha Giang – northernmost point of Viet Nam where hang 54m2-area red flag with yellow star, the metaphoric image of the 54 ethnic groups fluttering in the wind.
4. Hanh Phuc Road (Happiness Road) – 50-year road of blood and flower
The fourth wonder is Happiness Road – the road of blood and flower. It is about 200km long and built by thousands of youth volunteers from 16 ethnic groups of 8 Vietnam Northern provinces. It was completed within 6 years (1959-1965), equivalent to over 2 million working days. In which, the pass route over Ma Pi Leng was built by suicide troops volunteers who had to hang on cliffs and move every centimeter within 11 months. Ma Pi Leng was unofficially called one of the “big four mountain passes” in the mountainous regions in the north of Vietnam, along with O Quy Ho, Khau Pha, Pha Din.
Happiness road is a bridge bringing light to the highland. Not only built by effort, but also by blood and even lives of youthful volunteers for a long time. This year is also the 50th celebration of Ha Giang – Dong Van Happiness Road completion day.
5. Ma Pi Leng Pass – “Not traveling Pi Leng – Won’t be a backpacker”
This is just a lightly silly analogy of authors based on phrase “Not coming Great Wall, not be a hero”. With majestic landscape of the most stature, incomparably dangerous roads like Ma Pi Leng Pass, it is “Not traveling Pi Leng, won’t be a backpacker”.
Ma Pi Leng means literally “Horse’s nose bridge” in Mandarin. But in figurative sense, this name refers to the most dangerous mountain peak where mares climb to then suffer miscarriage and die. That place has such high steep that makes horses stop breathing when climbing, or the peak is steep as the bridge of horse nose. However, according to some Mong people, true name is Mao Pi Leng Pass, meaning “bridge nose of cat”.
The Ma Pi Leng mountain pass perhaps may rank as the “big four wonders” of Ha Giang, however, it is regretted that the pass were “concrete”. Therefore, despite of the spectacular scenery, the jagged cliffs and pass’s nature are not as original as that in the past.
6. Dong Van Ancient Town – a capital among stone plateau’s heart.
Referring to the old town, not only talking about the ancient town of Hoi An or Ha Noi 36 streets, but also Dong Van ancient town.
Dong Van town located deeply in the bowels of valley, is surrounded all directions by stone. It has 40 houses lied next to each other at mountain’s foot. In early morning, the old town painting is combined harmoniously with two colors: striking yellow sun and gray old houses.
7. Quan Ba Couple Mountain – “Thick scene creating a natural building”
Quan Ba Couple Mountain is round shape, fully charm, looks like the sleeping fairy’s fully breasts. Amid the rolling mountains and terraced fields, it is outstanding by two mountains whose funny shape, which makes visitors cannot be not surprising at the magnificent beauty of the Creator.

10. Sung La village – “Where flowers bloom on rock”
From Yen Minh to Dong Van town, to Pho Bang fork, to where the pretty pass embraces a beautiful green valley, it is the Sung La valley – “a rose” of stone plateau.
Sung La is like a peaceful and beautiful nature painting, located amid rugged mountains which is totally dark color, and the strong houses with its ancient roofs by time.
Hmong people in Sung La plant buckwheat and cauliflower flowers on the high hill; maize, paddy on flat land of valley bottom. The lightly green of tender maize, paddy blends with pink of buckwheat flower and dark green of sa-mu forest superbly among space…
11. The brocade weaving village of Lung Tam – Treasure of the Mong
Looking down from heaven gate, Lung Tam commune is hidden under the misty peaks covered by cloud all four seasons. This is the residence of Mong ethnic people, well-known for the occupation of weaving linen, dyeing indigo and wax drawing. They concept that: “Only when wearing linen, we would not forget our ancestors …”
“Brocade is the treasure of Lung Tam. Everywhere in Ha Giang, The place where the Hmong live, brocade is there; but brocade products are preserved, developed and popular only in Lung Tam “, said Mr Hang Duong Thanh, Chairman of Lung Tam Commune.
