Located in the Pu Luong massif of Hoang Lien Son range, The peak Ta Chi Nhu with the height of 2979 meters in Yen Bai province which is the best way to conquer this sixth highest mountain in Vietnam is considered very difficult due to harsh climate and requirements of strength and toughness.
However, the beauty of clouds, mountains draw the attraction of those, who have passion for hunting pictures of beautiful moments of the nature and who are avid for discovery.
1. The best time to start:
The favor time to conquer the peak is on sunny days in the early winter or in the early spring. Because at that time, it is very nice, not too sunny or too cold, you don’t need to lose much energy to climb up.
If you depart from Hanoi, it should take about 3 days to finish the route. 3 days is the reasonable period for you to climb up, enjoy the natural beauty and regulate your health. The time could be shortened in one day and a half in in case you have a really good physical strength.
You could catch a bus from Hanoi to Yen Bai with the ticket price of 100,000 – 160,000 VND for one way, then hire a motorbike in Yen Bai city to move to Tram Tau district, then to Xa Ho village. It takes about 6-7 km from the commune center to the parking lot and start a challenging climbing journey.
3.What to bring?
Before your journey at least 2 weeks, you need to do exercises to improve your physical strength. If you do not have enough heath, you could be an obstacle to your group about the movement speed and unexpected situations on the road such as fainting along the road, not reaching the resting place before dark.
Personal items: Sleeping bags, sufficient clothes, hats, climbing shoes, sticks, lighters, mosquito repellent, food and medical equipment… If you bring a camera, remember to choose a waterproof bag in case it’s rain and humid in the high mountain.
In addition to the usual medicines to take such as flu, fever, cough,…you need to prepare not only a few extra ginger tea to drink in the early morning in order to regulate your body temperature, but also some heating bags, backup chargers…
It is advised to take the initiative in bringing food, not to buy food in Tram Tau district because it is hard to buy what you need in this small district. However, you could buy necessary things in Yen Bai city unless you want to carry heavy luggage during the long route.
The first day: Hanoi – Nghia Lo
It takes about 5 hours to go a 200 km route from Hanoi to Nghia Lo town, Yen Bai province. When arriving here, you should take time to have a short rest, eat and walk to some places in the town and prepare a good heath for the next day of mountain climbing.
The second day: Nghia Lo – Tram Tau – Xa Ho – Ta Chi Nhu
It is far about 31km from Nghia Lo town to Tram Tau district, and move into Xa Ho village to go up Ta Chi Nhu mountain.
Note: The mountain is quite sloping, the path is small and muddy, the mountain’s back is dangerous without any clinging points, you have to crawl to climb at some sections, and need to lower the center of gravity to avoid losing strength. The mountain is bare, so the wind is very strong, it is essential to have sticks to support climbing. It takes about from 6 to 7 hours to get to the stable where there is a natural water source and it is possible to camp here. Therefore, you should try to depart from the parking lot latest 10 am to arrive in time before dark.
The third day: Watch clouds – Go down the mountain – Come back Hanoi
The dawn on the Ta Chi Nhu peak is a reward for all your efforts. Nevertheless, it depends on the weather you could catch nice cloud sea or not. After watching fantastic cloud sea and having relaxing moments, you should collect garbage before leaving. It will be much faster to go down the mountain than climb up the peak, yet the road is muddy for its mist, you should be careful.
– You should hire a local guide to have a reliable companion or a person to help you carry items for the whole team. In case you don’t know who to hire, then ask for the way to the secretary’s house of Xa Ho village for help.
– If it is dark but not to come to accommodation yet, the best advice is to stop and find a wide shelter enough to camp. Don’t keep moving for its dangers at night.
– There should be a fixed anchor and strong ropes for its strong wind at the place.
– After going down the mountain, you can see peaceful life of local people, cows eating grasses on the mountains and other simple images of life on the road. Spend a second to enjoy and take photos.
